Kenneth E. “Blackie” Buchanan, Sr., 70, of Mt. Vernon, died at 1:55 a.m. Thursday, March 11, 2010, at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Monday, April 17, 1939, in Fairfield, the son of Arthur Buchanan, Sr. and Myrtle (Darnell) Buchanan. He married Wilma Austin on March 1, 1980, in Mt. Vernon, and she survives.
Graveside services will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Keenes. Interment will follow.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
“Blackie” is survived by his wife; son, Kenny Buchanan and wife Chris of Mt. Vernon; four daughters, Bonnie Taylor and husband Kenny of Mt. Vernon, Kim Hill and husband William of Texico and Ramona Trouthon and Angie Beatle, both of Billings, Mont.; four stepsons, Jeff Collins and wife Debbie of Las Vegas, Nev., Bruce Shurtz and wife Sandy of Scheller, Steve Austin and wife Tammy of Mt. Vernon and Charles Eugene Austin and wife Lisa of Steeleville; stepdaughter, Teresa Austin of Mt. Vernon; two brothers, Arthur Buchanan, Jr. and wife Linda and Donald Buchanan, all of Sims; and two sisters, Jeanie McIntyre and husband Alvin of Wayne City and Pauletta Millsap and husband James of Hartsville, Mo. Eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Herbert, Robert and Harlen Buchanan; sister, Florince Hail; and a cousin, Ralph Buchanan.
“Blackie” was a farmer and worked at Buchanan Sawmill.
