John Scott

John Donoho Scott, 90, of McLeansboro, and formerly of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 1:56 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.



He was born in Mt. Vernon on Wednesday, June 25, 1919, a son of James A. and Ruth E. (Donoho) Scott. He married Norma Ermaline Tate on Oct. 21, 1943 in Mt. Vernon, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 14, 1987.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Chuck Ellis officiating. Interment will follow at New Home Lowery Cemetery in Jefferson County. Members of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct full military honors at the cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.



Mr. Scott is survived by two daughters, Venus Scott-Sadler and husband Andrew of McLeansboro and Sharlet Flora of Annapolis, Md.; two sisters, Betty Heath of Sun City, Ariz., and Ruby Gowler of Fairfield; nine grandchildren, Don and Michelle Lewis of O’Fallon, Mo., Clint Lewis and Angie of Ocala, Fla., Alan Scott and Katherine of Brentwood, Calif., Eric Scott and Amy of St. Peters, Mo., Zane Scott II of Kansas City, Mo., David Scott of Kansas City, Mo., Heather Scott of Bowling Green, Mo., Kirk and Tara Flora of Eagle Mountain, Utah, and Kane and Amy Flora of Front Royale, Va.; daughter-in-law, Mary Scott of Bowling Green, Mo.; brother-in-law, Jim Sallee of Sesser; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.



His parents; his wife; one son, Zane Scott; one grandson; six brothers; and four sisters preceded him in death.



John had a photography business in Mt. Vernon prior to his enlistment into the United States Navy in 1940. One year later he was a Quartermaster stationed aboard the USS Maryland (BB 46) while moored in Battleship Row along the southwest shore of Ford Island during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was also a survivor of the D-Day Invasion and was involved in the European, African, Middle Eastern and Asiatic Pacific theaters of operation. Following the conclusion of his naval service in 1946, he was employed at McDonnell-Douglas Corporation in St. Louis as a tool and model builder and planning engineer. John was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1671 in McLeansboro.
