Herbert Duncan, Jr.

Herbert C. Duncan, Jr., 82, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at Nature Trail Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.



He was born in Fort Benning, Ga., on Friday, April 8, 1927, a son of Herbert C., Sr. and Lena Faye (Gullic) Duncan.



Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Vernon with Father Bert Iffert officiating. Members of the Mt. Vernon American Legion will conduct a flag presentation service at the cemetery. Interment will follow.



Mr. Duncan is survived by four brothers, Fred Duncan of Herrin, Russell Duncan of Anna, John Duncan and wife Lela Mae of Centralia, and James P. Duncan and wife Doris of Rochelle; a sister, Virginia Harlow and husband Willis of Herrin; and several nieces and nephews.



His parents; one brother, Frank Duncan; and three sisters, Joan Duncan, Margie Marie Duncan and Ruth Mendenhall, preceded him in death.



Herbert was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, worked at Sterling Steel Company, Ziegler Stove Company in Centralia and was of the Catholic Faith.
