Phyllis Jean Brown, 77, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 3:53 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
She was born in Mt. Vernon on March 10, 1932, the daughter of Gale and Helen (Dulany) Wilson. She married William Brown, Jr. on Sept. 26, 1953, in West Frankfort.
In honor of her wishes there will be no services.
Mrs. Brown is survived by her husband, William “Bill” Brown, Jr. of Mt. Vernon; daughter, Karen Flanagan and husband Dave of Elgin; two grandsons, Jason Flanagan and wife Pam of Elgin and Justin Flanagan of Elgin; granddaughter, Jennifer Flanagan and fiancé Phil Church of Elgin; two brothers, Bob Hicks and wife Arlene of Mt. Vernon and Ben Hicks and wife Ellen of Newton; a niece, Debbie Reynolds and husband Steve of Mt. Vernon; four nephews, Doug Hicks and Brad Hicks of Newton and Brad Brown and Bruce Brown of Nashville, Tenn.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Along with her father who preceded her in death when she was 4-years-old, her mother; one son, Scott Alan Brown; and her stepfather, Val Allen, preceded her in death.
Phyllis was a member of the Mt. Vernon Township High School cheerleading squad from 1948-1949 and 1949-1950 when they won the state championship; she was an avid golfer at Crooked Creek Golf Links and was Women’s Clothing Department Manager and Buyer at J.C. Penney for 18 years.
