This week’s burst of spring air not only led to time outside for many local residents, but it also led to many deciding to take the opportunity to burn leaves and brush on their properties. Jefferson Fire Protection District Chief Mike Huntman offers a warning, however. “It’s a nice time right now and people are getting out, cleaning their yards and burning brush,” he said. “But if the wind is blowing, do not burn. It’s a lot drier than people think.”
Huntman urges residents to have a garden hose ready for quick dispersal of water should a fire start to get out of hand. If that is not enough, the chief said, residents should not hesitate to call the fire department for assistance before a fire reaches the point of becoming a larger threat.
Huntman said grass fires are common this time of year. Being prepared for the worst when burning items can save a lot of time and effort, if not lives. Please follow the suggestions of local fire officials.
