Last Thursday was a banner day for Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County and all of Southern Illinois with the unveiling of the Lincoln statue on the lawn of the 5th District Appelate Courthouse.
The distinguished panel presentation led by former Governor Edgar, the seven judges of the Illinois Supreme Court hearing two cases in the actual courthouse where President Lincoln himself once argued a case and the dedication/unveiling of the unique Lincoln sculpture will be recorded in history for those who will live after us.
The purpose of this letter is to give special commendation to one of our own. This community and this state owe a huge debt of gratitude to local attorney Mark Hassakis, whose vision, leadership and untiring efforts made last Thursday’s events possible. Mark, we thank you for our grandchildren and their grandchildren and for all who now have a permanent reminder connecting Mr. Lincoln and Mt. Vernon.
Job well done, we are privileged to call you our friend.
