Our View: A sad sign of the times at Ashley
It is a sad commentary on our culture today that Ashley Grade School has had to implement new security measures such as digital video recording surveillance equipment as reported in Tuesday’s newspaper. Ashley is a small school in a small, rural town, the type of atmosphere once immune from the threat of violence against children.
The landscape changed on Oct. 6, when a student at the school discovered a loaded .22 caliber handgun in a school restroom prior to the start of a school day. Suddenly, Ashley joined the thousands of other schools throughout the nation on notice that danger lurks everywhere.
Officials at Ashley have taken significant measures to increase security at the grade school. While it is a sad reflection of our society that the measures are necessary, it is also a relief that the measures followed an incident in which no one was harmed. We are thankful the incident, though cause for alarm, was not much, much worse.
