Our View: County students deserve recognition
As schools throughout Southern Illinois are facing problems with late payments for state aid, one thing everyone can be proud of are the 39 Illinois State Scholars in Jefferson County.
According to the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, only 10 percent of seniors throughout the state make the grade to be named as an Illinois State Scholar.
Mt. Vernon Township High School boasted 30 state scholars; Waltonville High School had two; four state scholars are at Webber Township High School; and three of them are from Woodlawn High School.
At MVTHS, state scholars account for about 10 percent of the senior class, according to Superintendent Dr. Michael Smith.
We congratulate all Jefferson County Illinois State Scholars and honor their hard work that has earned them the high honor and designation.
