Our View: Keep cool during heated events
High school basketball has reached the holiday tournament portion of the 2009-10 winter season. Already this week, play has taken place at Wayne City with the Conrad Allen Holiday Tournament. Over the next couple of weeks, tournaments will be played at both Centralia and Sesser, as well as many other communities throughout Southern Illinois. And a grade school holiday tournament will be played at Bethel Grade School following Christmas.
With so many games packed into a short period of time, it is inevitable that tempers will be short and emotions high during the games. So now may be a good time to pause and reflect on the attitudes displayed during the hectic weeks.
Adults, remember that youngsters are always paying attention to how you act. They will follow suit. If you act in a disparaging manner, they may think it is OK to do the same. Likewise, practicing good sportsmanship also will affect the children.
This should be a fun time of the year. Let’s all do our part to make sure it remains that way.
