Our View: Weather watch increases safety

The Village of Dix announced Wednesday it is in the process of installing a tornado warning system which should be completed in the next couple of weeks.

“We decided to install the tornado system mostly for the well being and safety of the residents of Dix and the surrounding area,” said Village Trustee Leo Pijut. “We’ve been thinking about this for a long time.”

The warning system, in preparation for the tornado season next spring, will be working in conjunction with the Jefferson Fire Protection District when it alerts Bonnie, Ina and Rend Lake College.

And though winter has its claws clutched to the area, the system is a vital necessity to the residents of Dix, who previously had no warnings of tornadoes or thunderstorms. In fact, just last spring, a tornado was reported in Texico and evidence of damaged trees and power poles blown over stretched throughout parts of the northern county, from Woodlawn into Texico.

We commend the village for seeing to the safety of its residents and the surrounding area. With the spring season only a few months away, it’s good to know residents can be more prepared in case of threatening weather.
