Laura Johnson thought the Mt Vernon Flippers would finish mid-pack in hosting Saturday's Southern Illinois Swim League Championships, and her prediction proved valid.
With three competitors earning high-point in their respective age divisions, the Flippers finished fourth (282 points) behind league champion Marion (411), Herrin and Du Quoin at Veterans Park Pool.
The event was suspended for about an hour due to a rain storm, but once action resumed, the event finished without incident.
King City's Andrew Roberts (boys 9-10), Isabel Heitmeyer (9-10 girls) and Aaron Holt (15-18 boys) all finished with top points by sweeping their events.
A. Roberts took the 100-meter individual medley, 25 backstroke and 50 freestyle; Heitmeyer copped the 100 IM, 25 backstroke and 25 breaststroke. She also swam anchor on the Flippers' winning 200 freestyle relay; Holt won the 50 freestyle, 100 IM and 50 butterfly.
Taylor Roberts won the 11-12 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle; while Cheyenna Rhine won the 11-12 breaststroke (teammate Hannah Owens was second) and was second in the 11-12 100 IM. Rhine was second place high-point in her age group.
Rhine, Owens, T. Roberts and I. Heitmeyer all took part in the winning 200 freestyle relay.
The 9-10 100 freestyle relay of Talia Carello, Hannah Heitmeyer, Madelynn Fuquay and Madison Crews was second, as were Alyssa Walker in the 7-8 25 butterfly and Carello in the 9-10 25 butterfly and 25 freestyle.
The top swimmers from Saturday's meet will advance to next weekend's All-Star event, to be held in Milstadt.
