MT. VERNON —
Several basketball teams were on display in Changnon Gym on Tuesday night.
The Rams ended the evening with a team scrimmage. Mt. Vernon is less than a week away from its opening game.
The team starts the season in Marion at the Pyramid Plus Tournament. Mt. Vernon plays four games in five days over Thanksgiving week and open at 6:30 p.m. against Herrin.
“Obviously we still have a lot of stuff to work on and a lot of stuff where we can really improve and get better, but just from a standpoint of running our sets, getting in the right spots I was as happy as I can ever remember being at a (Meet the Team) game,” Mt. Vernon coach Scott Gamber said. “I think we ran our sets really well. I thought our motion was not bad. And it’s tough going against your own team because they know what’s coming with everything.”
Mt. Vernon’s girls team starts the season at the Nashville Tournament. The Lady Rams open Monday against Okawville. Mt. Vernon coach Jeff Lonnon said he was happy with the way his team shot the ball during its team scrimmage.
“We made some shots,” Lonnon said. “We’ve been making shots in practice, some threes. I was pleased with our perimeter shooting. I was pleased with the transition game. I thought we got out and ran like I wanted us too most of the time.”
Returning starter Kelby Kujawa missed the evening because of sickness.
In addition to the varsitybasketball teams, the freshman teams conducted scrimmages. The dance and cheerleading squads also entertained the crowd with several routines.
