Lady Rams tennis team begins postseason play

MT. VERNON — The Lady Rams tennis team will have a pair of seeded doubles teams when they enter the Carbondale sectional today.

Each of the nine schools at the sectional will have a pair of doubles teams and two singles players competing. The top six teams in singles and doubles are seeded. Any individual player or doubles team that advances to the sectional semifinals automatically qualifies for the state finals.

The Lady Rams enter the playoffs after finishing 9-3 as a team this year and finished second in the South Seven Conference.

“It’s been an excellent season for them,” Mt. Vernon coach Randy Knox said. “I’ve been very pleased with how well they’ve performed this year. They’ve exceeded my expectations in their play.”

Mt. Vernon’s doubles team of Marisa Uhls and Katie Wall enters the tournament as the highest seeded duo. Uhls and Wall will be a No. 2 seed.

“I think they got a nice seed because of their performance this season,” Knox said. “They’re certainly hopeful that they can make it to state if they play well.”

The other Mt. Vernon doubles team of Jade Knox and Gauri Kaushal will be a No. 6 seed.

“They’re more of a long shot,” Knox said. “(I’m) real pleased to get (them) seeded in the top six.

“They have an opportunity to possibly make it to state or at least play in a match where they have an opportunity to get there.”

Both Mt. Vernon singles players — Kayla Burk and Liz Hurst — enter the tournament without seeds.

Mt. Vernon starts its matches at 1 p.m. today. Semifinal and championship matches will be on Saturday.

Carbondale, Centralia and Marion will also represent the South Seven Conference at the sectional.
