MT. VERNON —
Mt. Vernon’s boys soccer team opened the playoffs with a 1-0 upset win against the host school Tuesday.
“It means a ton,” Mt. Vernon coach Jeff Harrison said. “This is something to celebrate for us.
“It’s as big of a win as we’ve ever had.”
Anthony Reitz scored the lone goal of the game in the second half off an assist from Tyler Ellis. The regional victory came after a pair of one-goal regular season losses to Carbondale.
Mt. Vernon goalie J.J. Weigel and the rest of the Rams defense teamed together for the shutout.
“It wasn’t just surviving,” Harrison said. “It was taking away what they were trying to do. J.J. didn’t even get his hands on (the ball) much in the first half. The second half it changed a little bit.”
Mt. Vernon plays the top seed Marion at 2 p.m. Saturday. It will be Mt. Vernon’s third regional final appearance in school history. Marion beat the Rams twice this season.
“Those key moments that we’re going to have, it will be fewer than it was tonight,” Harrison said. “We’ve got to be more efficient.”
