Webber slams past Noble

BLUFORD — Ty Henderson crushed a grand slam and helped Webber’s baseball team beat Noble-Clay City 8-6 Friday night.

Henderson led the Trojans offensive effort with three hits and four RBI. Gage Raudenbush added a pair of hits and an RBI.

“We found a way to win,” Webber coach Sam Root said. “We left a lot of runners on base. A lot of things didn’t go our way whether it was our fault or not, but we found a way to grind it out.”

Noble-Clay City jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after a pair of Webber pitchers struggled to find the strike zone. Logan Ganieany started the game and lasted an inning before Levi Aydt pitched two innings. The pair combined for six walks in their three innings of work.

The Trojans scratched back into the game in the third inning. Jordan Wheeler started the rally when he reached on an error. Zane Austin, Koaltin Dye and Henderson all followed with singles. The consecutive hits helped Webber cut the deficit to 3-2.

“We have just as much confidence in our seven, eight, nine hitters as we do our one, two, three; and we had two or three kids on the bench that are ready to swing,” Root said. “That helps in the long run.”

Webber behind Henderson’s bat delivered the big blow in the fourth. Gage Raudenbush started the inning with a single. Austin Gowler reached on an error, and the base loaded when Austin walked. Henderson stepped to the plate with two outs and rocked a grand slam over the right field fence. The home run gave the Trojans their first lead of the game at 6-3. Noble never recovered.

“Senior swing, that’s what that was,” Root said. “(He’s) a four-year starter, eighth season of high school baseball for us. That’s what you need, and that’s what he gave us.”

Michael Gartin stepped to the mound for Webber in the fourth inning and finished the game for the Trojans, earning the win. He finished with three strikeouts and three walks over the last four innings.

“Michael gave us a gutsy effort out of the bullpen today and ate some innings,” Root said.

Webber is 2-0 this season and hosts Grayville in a doubleheader today.
