Lady Rams rip Annies

Crews serves up three assists

MT. VERNON — Sydney Crews was the catalyst for the Lady Rams soccer team in a 6-2 Tuesday win over rival Centralia.

“She was hitting the ball well from the corner today,” Mt. Vernon coach Jeff Harrison said. “Everything was through the box. Everything was a scoring opportunity so it was sweet.”

Crews set up three goals on corner kicks and scored with three minutes left in the game. Whitney Warner added a pair of goals. Mt. Vernon used a balanced offense that saw five different players send shots past the Centralia goalie.

“It’s definitely good to see that we have a little diversity and who can put the ball in the back of the net to spread around the love, the confidence,” Harrison said.

Centralia took an early lead on a goal less than five minutes into action. The Annies added another score late in the opening half on a free kick that sailed over the head of Mt. Vernon goalie Paisley Stewart.

“We’re definitely not mistake-free teams here, and then you throw in the conditions of today a sloppy field,” Harrison said. “It’s muddy. It’s wet. It’s cold. It just adds to the mistakes. They capitalized on the few chances that they got, and early on we weren’t.”

Mt. Vernon’s offense dominated throughout the game. The Lady Rams outshot Centralia 21-3 and finished with six corner kicks. The Annies couldn’t muster a shot on goal in the second half.

Mt. Vernon’s Betsy Kueker knotted the score at one with 25 minutes left in the first half. Crews sent a corner kick into the middle of the box that found the senior. Kueker placed her shot past the Centralia keeper. A minute later Mollee Sager gave Mt. Vernon the lead for good. Again the goal came from a corner kick off the foot of Crews. Malalina Overstreet put the Lady Rams up 3-1 when she put a rebound into the net.

Centralia never threatened in the second half. Warner restored the Lady Rams two-goal cushion 23 seconds into action. The Centralia goalie couldn’t clear the ball, and Warner pounced on it and knocked it in for a goal. Five minutes later Crews knocked a corner into Warner that she converted to put Mt. Vernon ahead 5-2. Crews made the count six when Sager slipped a pass to her at the top of the box. Crews turned and fired a shot in for a score.

Mt. Vernon is 1-3-1 this season and host Althoff on Monday, April 1.
