FREEBURG —
Mt. Vernon’s girls basketball team topped Freeburg 39-26 Saturday.
Hannah Owens and Aaliyah Palmer led the offense and finished with 11 points each.
Claire Ryan added seven, and Courtney Scarbrough finished with six. Kelby Kujawa had four points.
The Lady Rams sealed the game from the foul line in the final quarter. Mt. Vernon hit 14 of its 18 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter.
The game was tied at eight after the opening quarter, and the Lady Rams took a 19-12 lead into halftime. After allowing just a dozen points in the first half, Mt. Vernon’s defense limited Freeburg to 14 second-half points.
“Our defense was excellent, probably as good as we’ve played all year long,” Lonnon said.
The Lady Rams again played without leading scorer Haley Lockhart, who suffered a dislocated kneecap against Centralia.
Mt. Vernon is 8-1 this season. The Lady Rams travel to Marion on Tuesday.
