VANDALIA — The Mt. Vernon Lions Wrestling Club on Saturday qualified seven individuals from the Vandalia sectional to the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation (IKWF) state finals.
In the Novice Division (age 11 and 12). The Lions had two sectional champions in Trace Carello (108 pounds) and Tristan Penrod (177).
Jacob Persman (95) qualified by placing third. Two other Novice Lions, Alexis Coleman (62) and Andrew Hiner (115), barely missed qualifying by taking fourth.
In the Senior Division (age 13-14), the Lions crowned two sectional champs in Alex Hopkins (101) and Chase Vosburgh (108).
In the Intermediate Division (age 9-10), Gage Burroughs (79) and Brandon Rutherford (89) captured sectional titles, while teammate Brennen Docherty (122) finished fourth.
Carello, Penrod, Persman, Hopkins and Vosburgh will compete in the IKWF Novice/Senior state finals March 12-13 at the Metro Centre in Rockford. Burroughs and Rutherford will compete in the IKWF Intermediate state finals March 19-20 at Danville’s Palmer Arena.
In the overall team standings, the Lions finished fourth in a field of 34 teams.
“These kids have worked extremely hard over the last 4 months to reach this point,” co-coach Scott Tickner said. “We are very proud of them.”
