Lady Rams tennis players headed to RLC

MT. VERNON — A pair of Lady Rams tennis players signed with Rend Lake College on Wednesday.

Marisa Uhls and Katie Wall both committed to the college. The duo advanced to the state final last season after finishing fourth in the sectional.

“I think it will be pretty fun to know someone and have a pretty good friend that’s going to be there and hopefully play doubles with,” Wall said.

The signings come a season after Mt. Vernon’s Alyssa Burge and Ally Adcock committed to the school.

“I’m glad that I already know some people, and I know some of the other girls from Benton too,” Uhls said. “They were my rivals before, but now I’m glad that they’ll be on my team.

Uhls finished with a career record of 32-8 in singles and 57-23 as a doubles player. Wall was 14-9 in singles and 51-26 in doubles matches. The duo teamed together to form Mt. Vernon’s top doubles team last year.

“It’s always good if you can sign girls that have played together,” Rend Lake womens tennis coach Dave Junkins said. “Because you know one of the difficult things you bring in girls from different schools, it’s hard to get them to mesh together, play together because they don’t know each other.”

Uhls was the team’s top singles player last year, and Wall was the team’s No. 3 player.

“I believe (Marisa) she’ll keep improving if she plays for Rend Lake, and she’ll be a great asset to their program,” Mt. Vernon coach Randy Knox said. “She’s a quiet leader. She leads by example, and she’s going to work hard.

“Katie, she was kind of a late bloomer in that I think she really dedicated herself to improving her tennis game just in the last year or so.”
