Rams survive in overtime

MT. VERNON — The Rams avoided an overtime scare against Decatur Eisenhower to win 47-39 Saturday night.

“I am proud of the fact that when it got into overtime, obviously they had all the momentum because we had just given up a seven-point lead, to be able to finish it out was very important for us,” Mt. Vernon coach Scott Gamber said.

Clay Payne put the Rams up 34-27 midway through the fourth quarter on a dunk that caused the crowd to chant his name.

“I really felt like that was going to re-energize us get us through, and it just didn’t,” Gamber said. “We made a couple bad mental mistakes, bad turnovers, almost let it go.”

The Panthers clawed back and were able to force the extra session. After Payne’s dunk, Eisenhower ended regulation on a 10-3 finish. The run culminated with a driving bank shot from Eugene Smith with two seconds left. The Rams called timeout with a half second left but didn’t attempt a shot as the clock expired.

Smith was able to penetrate the Rams’ defense throughout the night and cause problems. He finished with 10 points.

“He killed us,” Gamber said. “He got to the lane every time.

He did a really nice job of getting into our defense.”

In overtime, the Rams regrouped and rolled to the victory.

Payne opened the overtime scoring with a bucket. Ty’Triil Trimble added four straight free throws. Eisenhower’s only basket of the overtime came on an offensive rebound putback by Jalen Robinson. It was one of four extra chances the Panthers got in the second half.

“That’s very, very concerning with going into Cahokia Friday night who’s a better offensive rebounding team than the two we just played,” Gamber said.

The Panthers pushed the game to overtime, but in the early going the game didn’t look headed for an extra period. The Rams dominated the opening period.  Mt. Vernon jumped out to a 7-0 lead after Leonta Badger scored a pair of buckets and Trimble canned a 3-pointer. Mt. Vernon held a 14-3 lead after the first and led 21-13 at halftime.

“It was almost like we stepped back and lost a little intensity,” Gamber said. “It’s understandable but not acceptable.”

Mt. Vernon is 19-4 this season.
