Woodlawn advances to final

WAYNE CITY — Woodlawn’s girls basketball team is back in the regional final.

The Lady Cardinals knocked off Wayne City 47-30 Wednesday night, reversing a pair of regular season defeats. The Lady Cardinals got an offensive boost from Kinzie Verhines. The senior finished with 13 points in a game that saw both teams struggle offensively after the first quarter.

“I think she realized the situation. I think she realized the game,” Woodlawn coach Eric Helbig said. “It’s a team that’s beat us twice, and everybody came out aggressive.”

Alexa Capps led Woodlawn with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Leah Sutton was also in  double figures with 12 points.

Wayne City piled up 36 rebounds in the game and 15 on the offensive end. But the Lady Indians couldn’t convert enough of the second chances.

The game stayed close in the first half, and Woodlawn took a 22-19 lead into the half. The Lady Cardinals made their move at the end of the third quarter. Leading by four, Capps canned a basket and followed with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give Woodlawn a 33-24 edge heading into the fourth quarter.

Helbig said the poor shooting by both teams brought extra focus to the defensive end. His Lady Cardinals held Wayne City to 12 of 46 from the field.

“We’ve struggled all year with getting them to go in the basket,” Wayne City coach Deairdra Dagg said. “It’s hard to beat a team three times. They know us inside and out. We know them inside and out.”

Brittany Stephenson led the Lady Indians with 11 points and nine rebounds. Wayne City finished the season 9-13 overall. Woodlawn faces Centralia’s Christ Our Rock at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

“They’ve had a tremendous season,” Helbig said. “They’ve got a big girl in (Amanda) Geiger who just killed us the first time we played them. It’s going to be a tough matchup.”
