Legion teams win, at Trenton today

GOREVILLE — Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141's Senior team swept Friday night's non-District doubleheader from host Marion.

Chris Braden's team knocked off Marion 5-3 in the opener, and rallied from a 6-0, first-inning deficit to post the sweep, 8-6.

In the first game, Travis Carello blasted a three-run homer in the top of the sixth, giving Brandon Bernard and Mt. Vernon the lead. Bernard lasted through the sixth, and Ryan Quick picked up a three-strikeout save in the seventh.

Pierce Borah had three hits, Quick two and Carello, Klayton Hahn and Ethan O'Neal all had one.

In the second game, Post 141 fell behind 6-0 after an inning, but it clawed its way back into the thick of things as O'Neal threw 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Ethan Gowler, John Hollingsworth, Borah, Quick and Hahn all had one hit.

"We played some good defense," Braden said. "O'Neal came on in the second game and held them scoreless while the offense caught up. In the first game, Bernard kept the ball down — he allowed two home runs, but they were both solo shots — and Quick finished things off."

Mt. Vernon (5-3) plays a doubleheader today at Trenton, beginning at 2 p.m., following a 10 a.m. twin bill pitting both posts' Junior teams.
