CARBONDALE —
Mt. Vernon top doubles team of Marisa Uhls and Katie Wall qualified for the state finals with a pair of wins at the Carbondale sectional on Friday.
Uhls and Wall will play in today’s sectional semifinals starting at 10:30 a.m. All singles players and doubles teams that advance to the sectional semifinals automatically qualify for the state finals. Uhls and Wall entered the semifinals with a two-set win against an unseeded Fairfield team.
The Lady Rams other doubles team of Jade Knox and Gauri Kaushal were eliminated after winning their first match of the day. The duo lost to the No. 4-seeded Centralia team 6-0, 6-0.
Each of Mt. Vernon’s doubles teams entered the sectional with seeds and got opening round byes.
In the second round, Uhls and Wall won 6-0, 6-1 against a team from Carmi. Knox and Kaushal started their sectional with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against a team from Mt. Carmel.
Both Mt. Vernon’s singles players were eliminated in the second round. Liz Hurst won her first round match in three sets 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. Kayla Burk won her opening match 6-4, 6-3. Hurst lost in the second round to the No. 2 seed. Burk lost to the No. 4 seed.
