Sports Roundup: Mt. Vernon golfers finish 2nd in conference

CARBONDALE — Mt. Vernon’s boys golf team finished second at the South Seven Conference meet held in Carbondale on Thursday.

Marion won the conference title and shot a 296. Mt. Vernon followed with a 306. Other team scores were: Belleville Althoff 318, Centralia 337 and Carbondale 364.

Four individuals finished in the top 10 for the Rams. Jonathan Stowers led Mt. Vernon with a 73 and placed second overall. Marion’s Jaret Brewers was the individual medalist with a 69.

Trevor Flota shot a 77 and finished sixth. Matthew Williams was seventh with a 78, and Hayden Poninski was ninth overall with a 78.

Other Mt. Vernon scores were: Nick Meyer 82 and Jackson Horton 82.



Woodlawn 167, Johnston City 175

Taylor Fauss led Woodlawn and was the match medalist with a 39.

Other Woodlawn scores were: Gabe Owens 43, Ronnie Brake 44, Brett Harris 48, Dallas Quarterman 49, Logan Wollerman 51 and Adam Mundrell 59.



Girls golf

Mt. Vernon 186, Waltonville 193

Whitney Warner led Mt. Vernon with a 44.

Other Mt. Vernon scores were: Paige McDonald 47, Chelsea Sprinkle 47, Rachel Bolerjack 48, Paetyn Hayes 49, Colleen Ashby 50, Alexandria Pigg 58 and Kelsey Shannon 70.



Boys soccer

Carbondale 2, Mt. Vernon 1 OT

The Terriers scored five minutes into the first overtime to win the game.

Carbondale scored its first goal about six minutes into the game on a header. Mt. Vernon tied the game early in the second half. Zach Swinnen took a corner kick and knocked a ball into the box, and Anthony Reitz’s shot found the back of the net.

Mt. Vernon is 5-8 this season and travels to Anna-Jonesboro on Monday.



Girls tennis

Mt. Vernon 9, Centralia 0

Marisa Uhls won at No. 1 singles 10-3. Jade Knox won 10-7, and Katie Wall was victorious 11-9. Kayla Burk won 10-2, and Gauri Kaushal beat her opponent 10-7. Liz Hurst won at No. 6 singles 10-5.

The doubles team of Uhls and Wall won 10-8. Knox and Kaushal were victorious 10-7. The team of Burk and Hurst won 11-10 (7-4).

“I’m very happy with how our girls played tonight,” Mt. Vernon coach Randy Knox said. “I think it was our best match of the season so far.”

Mt. Vernon is 8-3 this season.



College Football

Millikin University

Mt. Vernon’s Marquette Moore was named Defensive Player of the Week in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

He had nine tackles and fumble recovery returned for a touchdown in Millikan’s 44-20 win against Aurora.

Mt. Vernon’s Darrell Mitchell blocked an extra point against Aurora.
