CAHOKIA —
Mt. Vernon’s freshman football team clinched at least a share of the South Seven title after beating Cahokia 18-12.
Cahokia scored on its opening possession, and the Rams responded with a 25-yard pass from quarterback Reed Millwood to Braden Fitzjerrells. Mt. Vernon took a 12-6 lead into halftime after Millwood scored on a one-yard run.
With the Rams trailing and 1:05 left in the game, Fitzjerrells threw a touchdown pass to Jailon Rush after a fake punt to win the game.
Mt. Vernon is 7-0 this season and travels to Centralia on Thursday. A victory would secure the conference championship.
