MT. VERNON —
A state finalist will lead the Rams bowling team into the season.
Maverick Wagner ended last year at the state final and placed 57th overall in the two-day event with a score of 2,407. He is one of three seniors who coach Dave Wagner said will be the center of his varsity squad. The other two are Brandon McPherson and Dayne Glossner.
“I’m real happy with what I’ve got this year,” Wagner said. “I think I’ve got some good talent, and I expect good play against other teams this year.”
This is Glossner’s first year with the team, but Wagner said he has experience in junior leagues.
“So he knows a little bit about how to throw the ball, and I think he’ll fit in there real good,” Wagner said.
McPherson and Wagner enter their fourth year in the bowling program. Both traveled to summer camp to gain more experience.
“They were over there for a week,” Wagner said. “Both of them have come out of that camp with a lot of information and a lot of technical improvements.”
Girls coach Susan Gentry expects senior Mikayla Emshoff along with juniors Alyssa Dudley, Taylor Allen and Olivia Rios to form the core of her Lady Rams team this year.
“I think all of those will play a key role, and I think I’m going to have a good team this year,” Gentry said.
Dudley advanced to the state finals her freshman season and is looking to return this season along with several of her teammates.
“They could make it, and if I could get the fifth one in there my whole team could make it,” Gentry said.
Mt. Vernon will host the boys and girls South Seven Conference meet at Nu Bowl Lanes on Dec. 8. Nu Bowl will also host the boys and girls sectional events.
Both bowling teams open the season at home against Herrin at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
