SESSER — It’s starting to come together for the Mt. Vernon Township High School volleyball team. Still, Lady Rams head coach Katelyn Kombrink was left a bit perplexed Tuesday evening after her team’s 25-16, 26-24 sweep at Sesser-Valier.
“It seems like we’re playing well together, but we’re not playing well in each game,” Kombrink said.” So now, we just have to start bringing everything together and having people out there that want to play each game instead of one game versus the next.”
MVTHS came out with guns a-blazing in the opener. Outside hitter Tessa England served up 10 first-game points, including five in a row that gave the Rams a 23-13 lead. Once MVTHS regained serve, Amy Dickerson put things away when a Red Devils bump hit the rafters at game-point.
However, Game Two wasn’t as smooth for the Vernois (3-9).
MVTHS was ahead 13-8 in the second game, but S-V came charging back to take a 14-13 lead on Lorena Marlo’s serving, which included two aces.
Kombrink made back-row changes twice during Marlo’s run, finally settling on Alex Frisby to stop the bleeding.
“I thought I’d play some other people and see what they had to offer,” Kombrink said.
The lead juggled between four servers, before MVTHS took hold on Miki Belcher’s 4-0 run. The sideout occurred when Mandy Pike took a poor pass from out of bounds at the net and sent it cross-court for a kill.
“She had a very good hit there,” Kombrink said of Pike.
S-V managed to tie the game at 21 and 22, but in the meantime, Kombrink put middle hitter Taylor Morgan back in, and the second of two kills gave the Rams the serve back at 23-22.
Sesser forced one more tie at 24-all, but Jacqueline Flood finished things off. First, her perfectly placed dump resulted in a sideout, and Flood then went to serve, and a bad pass by the Devils ended the proceedings.
“The effort was there,” Kombrink said. “We just kinda laid back in the second game — we weren’t as aggressive and weren’t as sure of ourselves and I’m not sure why. (S-V) put up a good fight; they were a scrappy team.”
Kombrink said her team’s serving was up to par.
“Our serving wasn’t bad,” she said. “Tonight it was like we weren’t focused or mentally in the game. In the first game, we had a couple of good servers, got some points.
“We then got a run on them and ran with it. In the second game maybe I should have made some (other) changes, but it’s very nice to get another win,” Kombrink said.
England served for 13 points, Dickerson seven in the second game.
The MVTHS jayvees (6-4) also won, 25-21, 21-25, 15-6. The team also won on Monday night against Salem, 22-25, 25-18, 25-11.
MVTHS returns to South Seven Conference play Thursday at Cahokia.
