WAYNE CITY — As the season winds down, Katelyn Kombrink isn’t asking for leaps-and-bounds improvements from her Mt. Vernon Township High School volleyball.
What she saw in Tuesday’s 25-20, 25-15 sweep at Wayne City was enough to make the Lady Rams’ short ride back to Jefferson County a pleasant one.
“We showed a lot of improvement from the first game,” Kombrink said. “We gained more confidence (after winning the opener) which always helps.”
MVTHS (7-20) and Lady Indians swapped short rallies in the first game before the Rams edged ahead 14-11 as Mandy Pike took serve, and got an ace and a bad WC spike to help Mt. Vernon punch the advantage to 15-11.
It wasn’t until Miki Belcher took over serving that MVTHS was able to apply some distance. Belcher ran off four straight points, including an ace, as the Vernois took command, 21-17.
Tessa England got a few points in, as did Laura Fleri, with the help of a Lauren Keeler kill, and the Rams set their sights on a sweep.
Keeler scored 12 points in the second game, her first string of points enabling the Rams to build a 5-2 lead.
The second time around, it was lights out for Wayne City. Leading 15-12 after Sarah Nociar’s kill, Keeler turned that short lead into an insurmountable 23-12 command.
Makeda Jones had a pair of kills during the rally, and England tacked on another.
Two servers later, the Rams wrapped things up.
“We’ve had our ups and downs,” Kombrink said. “We’ve got several people out, and now we’ve lost (setter/outside right hitter) Jacqueline Flood, who injured her shoulder. But the new lineup has adjusted well.”
MVTHS won the junior varsity match, 25-14, 32-30.
The Lady Rams, who went 0-2 at Saturday’s O’Fallon tournament, will conclude the regular season Thursday at Carbondale.

The View From Here: Sports landscape full of changes
Yes, the wheels of government turn slowly, but they do keep turning.
I salute King City mayor Mary Jane Chesley and the Mt. Vernon city council for their collective decision to name the soccer field at Lincoln Park, Steve Harrison Field, in honor of the beloved King City coach who passed away Feb. 12, 2011, one year ago on Sunday.
Signage for the newly renamed field will soon be in place. -
