CISNE — Eric Helberg knows there are times when his Woodlawn High School girls basketball team will require balanced scoring, but Monday night’s season-opening 48-13 romp at Cisne wasn’t one of them.
Rolling to a 24-2 lead after a quarter, the Lady Cardinals forced the host Lions into 39 turnovers and 4 of 33 shooting.
Mallory Hapeman (16 points) and Whitney Lowery (12) had their way inside, and Alexa Capps (13 points) provided relief from the wing.
“It was nice just to go out there and play against someone else for once,” Helbig said. “We were able to see some of the things we need to work on and some things that I think might be strengths for us during the season. This gave us a chance to try a few different things offensively and defensively and get everybody a lot of minutes.”
The game was originally slated to be an underglass contest, but turnved into a varsity affair. Woodlawn led 30-6 at the half, and 38-9 at the third stop.
“Our defense early on really took them out of anything they wanted to do,” Helbig said, “and forced a bunch of turnovers. We’re going to have to keep doing that this year to be successful. We didn’t shoot as well as we would have hoped, but that’s to be expected in a first game.”
WHS’s big three combined for 41 points.
“Mallory and Whitney were a load for them to handle inside tonight and Alexa did a nice job on converting in full court transition,” Helbig said. “There’s going to be times when we’ll need to get the job done inside and times when the guards will have to step up, so its nice to see that we have the ability to have a balanced offense.”
WHS plays at Noble Thursday.
