Lady Cards improve to 7-1

WAYNE CITY — In a game that featured cold shooting at both ends of the floor, Woodlawn did enough to get past Midland Trail Conference foe Wayne City on Monday, winning 37-26.

The Lady Cardinals (7-1, 1-1) shot 39 percent (15 of 38) from the field, while Wayne City shot 21 percent (9 of 43).

Woodlawn led 11-3 at the end of the first quarter, 22-10 at halftime and 30-17 heading into the fourth quarter before the Lady Indians rallied in the final period.

“We got out to a little lead early, but Wayne City never gave up,” said Lady Cardinals coach Eric Helbig. “We kind of relaxed a little bit at the end of the game, and Wayne City took advantage of that, got us to turn the ball over a couple of times and made it interesting at the end. Luckily, we were able to do just enough to hang on for the win.”

Whitney Lowery scored 12 of her game-high 14 points in the second half for Woodlawn.

“Early on, we did a good job of attacking the middle of the zone and Leah [Sutton] did a good job of finding the opening and then the open man,” said Helbig. “In the second half we had some stretches where we were able to get the ball down low, and Whitney was able to capitalize on several of those chances.”

Alexa Capps added 10 points for the Lady Cardinals.

The Lady Indians elevated their defensive intensity to close the gap in the second half.

“We had a little trouble with their man to man defense late in the game,” said Helbig. “They turned up their aggressiveness a bunch, and we were slow to match their intensity.”

Woodlawn hosts Grayville on Thursday in a game Helbig said will present a challenge for his team.

“They’re a very young and tough team,” he said. “We’re going to have to be prepared and mentally ready or they’re going to take it to us.”
