Conrad Allen Tournament

WAYNE CITY — Though they were obviously outmatched, the Webber Township High School Trojans put up a fight Monday night before heavily favored Zeigler-Royalton drew off for a 47-27 win Monday in the 56th annual Conrad Allen tournament.
ZR did zip out to an 8-0 lead before the Trojans (1-7) managed to get untracked. Webber guard Phillip Bodendieck did manage to put on a one-man show early for Webber, scoring his team’s first eight points.
By that time, the Tornadoes led 16-8 at the first stop, thanks to two 3-point baskets from Tyler Mitchell and two other three-point plays.
Webber made one final move midway through the second period. Phillip O’Dell sank a basket to cut the lead to 19-13, and Ethan Gowler later cut the deficit to a half-dozen again at 21-15.
However, ZR closed the half on a 7-0 run — Nick Beasley had a basket and Tyler Mitchell had another trey and a stop-and-pop off the left side — to snag a 28-15 halftime advantage.
Webber then ran into all kinds of scoring problems in the third period as ZR coach Jamie Moyers employed a 1-3-1 zone press that confused the Trojans’ ballhandlers.
All told, Webber scored just once in the third frame, with Eric Alvis driving the left baseline for a short jumper. The Tornadoes outscored Webber 12-2 during the stretch to build a 40-17 command at the third stop.
Both teams later cleared the benches when a Beasley score gave ZR a 46-20 lead with 3:24 to go.
Mitchell finished with 20 points to lead all scorers, Beasley adding 10. Bodendieck had just one more basket after his first-quarter barrage, but his 10 points still paced the Trojans.
In the evening’s other games, unbeaten Crab Orchard built an early lead before drawing away from Edwards County, 71-50, and Cisne blasted Grayville, 61-32.
