WOODLAWN —
Hamilton County struggled from the free throw line in the closing minutes against Woodlawn on Wednesday night but held off the Lady Cardinals to win 49-45.
“They’re a pretty good team, and for us to stay with it right there to the end of the game and with the way we are with our bench situation I feel pretty good going into regionals,” Woodlawn coach Eric Helbig said.
The Lady Foxes hit just four of their 10 attempts from the line in the final quarter. The misses gave Woodlawn a chance to rally from a 46-38 deficit in the final minute. Woodlawn was able to close within 48-45 and had possession of the ball in the final seconds. Alexa Capps fired a two-point jumper that missed.
“This was a tough game for us,” Hamilton County coach Clint Winemiller said. “It’s always tough to play up here. They have some good players.”
Woodlawn senior Leah Sutton eclipsed the 1,000 point mark in the game.
“It’s a huge accomplishment,” Sutton said. “It feels great, but I definitely couldn’t have done it without coach Helbig or my teammates.”
Sutton scored 15 points in the game and entered the game with 997 career points. She hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left in the first quarter to push her past the milestone.
“She’s been an amazing player,” Helbig said. “It’s great to have a senior to put as much work in as she has over the years to reach this accomplishment.”
The consistent shooting of Emma Moreton helped the Lady Foxes take an early lead. Hamilton County held a 20-13 advantage into the middle of the second quarter. Moreton led the team with 17 points.
“We knew Moreton could shoot,” Helbig said. “We lost her a couple times at the beginning of the game.”
With Woodlawn down seven Capps was able to shoot her team back into the game with three straight 3-pointers. The final bucket tied the game at 24 with less than a minute left in the half. Capps led Woodlawn with 20 points.
Woodlawn remains at home tonight against Cisne.
