CARBONDALE —
The golf season ended for Mt. Vernon, but two individuals advanced to the 2A state finals Monday.
Trevor Flota and Matthew Williams both shot a 73 for the Rams and moved on.
“They both played really well today so obviously they’re going to get a chance to move on,” Mt. Vernon coach Quinn McClure said.
McClure added the long day is a mental test for all the golfers involved.
“You’re going to have some ups and downs in your round. You just have to be able to weather the storm and both those guys did,” McClure said.
Nick Meyer shot a 78, and Jonathan Stowers finished with an 85 to round out the scoring for the Rams.
“Golf’s a funny game,” McClure said. “Jonathan played really well at the conference. He played really well at the regional and then just didn’t play very good today.”
As a team, Mt. Vernon finished with a 309 and missed out on the team state finals by just a few strokes. Waterloo won the team title with a 297. Belleville Althoff and Mt. Carmel both shot 304 to advance. Effingham placed fourth with a 306. McClure said he knew going into the sectional that advancing to the state finals would be decided by a small margin.
“They could all tell you a shot or two here or there that they could have done it over,” McClure said. “Especially kids that were 85 and 88. They could definitely recount several shots that they would like to have over.”
Logan Murphy in 2009 was the last Mt. Vernon boys golfer to qualify for the two-day state tournament. He finished 14th overall after shooting a 157.
The state final starts Friday.

All four Jefferson County golfers failed to advance. Gabe Owens, Ronnie Brake and Taylor Fauss competed for Woodlawn. Dennis Nelson represented Waltonville.
Effingham St. Anthony won the team title with a 309. Hamilton County finished fourth with a 331 and advanced a pair of individuals. Marc Cox led the Foxes with a 74, and Landon Vaughan shot a 76.
Cox and Vaughan will play in the 1A state finals on Bloomington’s Prairie Vista Golf Course starting on Friday. Cox competed at the state event last year and tied for sixth with a score of 156.
