MT. VERNON —
The Rams had a chance to take control of the South Seven lead, but lost 39-37 to Cahokia on Friday night.
“I felt like we put ourselves in a position to win the game down the stretch, and I kind of thought we mentally beat ourselves a couple times,” Mt. Vernon coach Scott Gamber said.
Mt. Vernon trailed for the majority of the game, but was able to cut Cahokia’s lead to two twice in the final quarter. The first time Ty’Riil Trimble drained a pull-up jumper midway through the quarter. The shot made the score 33-31. Cahokia’s Keenan Minor answered with a 3-pointer to push the advantage up to five with 2:22 left.
“I thought we let Minor get a great look at a three when we shouldn’t have,” Gamber said.
With less than two minutes left in the game, Mt. Vernon’s Michael Feezer found Trevor Flota in the corner for a long-range shot of his own to close the gap back to two.
The Rams wouldn’t get any closer.
Mt. Vernon’s defense was forced to scramble and foul in the closing seconds, and Minor was able to knock down three free throws in the final minute to seal the win.
“In a game like that we had a ton of opportunities, and we just missed them,” Gamber said.
Minor led all scorers with 14 points. His first four baskets all came on layups.
“In a 39-point game, you can’t let the best player on the court get 14,” Gamber said. “It’s tough because he’s so good. He’s going to get his.
“It’s one thing for him to get his coming off threes, banging tough shots. It’s another thing for him to get his shooting layups because we’re not helping.”
Leonta Badger led the Rams with 12 points and eight rebounds. Clay Payne finished with eight points and three rebounds. Flota added six points on two 3-pointers.
Cahokia took a 7-6 lead into the second quarter before Minor helped the Comanches to a 17-11 halftime lead after six points on three straight baskets in the quarter. One came on an offensive rebound. Mt. Vernon won the rebound battle 20-17. Cahokia was able to gather six offensive rebounds in the game.
Mt. Vernon is 19-5 this season and 6-2 in the South Seven Conference. Mt. Vernon has three remaining games in the regular season and will enter the Marion 3A regional as the top seed.
