Vosburghs medal at state final

MT. VERNON — The Rams wrestling program had its first state final medalists since 2010 on Saturday.

Chase Vosburgh (41-3) finished fifth in the 145-pound weight class. His brother Alex (39-5) placed sixth in 160 pounds.

“As far as I’m concerned, I thought they did great,” Mt. Vernon coach Sean Docherty said. “Both of them set records in Mt. Vernon wrestling history.”

Chase finished with the most wins (41) in a single season. Alex finished with the most takedowns. It’s also the first time the school has had multiple medalists at the state final.

“They obviously had their sights set a lot higher than fifth and sixth place. They were kind of bummed out about it,” Docherty said. “Alex was bummed out his last match was a loss.

“There’s five six hundred wrestles in the state of Illinois that would love to be in (their) position.”

Both wrestlers opened the 2A finals on Thursday. Chase won his opening two matches to advance to the semifinals. He lost his match with Dan Goress on Friday night. On Saturday, Chase competed in the wrestlebacks semifinal. He lost 2-0 against Dalton Coleman, which put him in the fifth-place match. He defeated Springfield’s Haratio Austin 6-4 in overtime to claim fifth place.

“I look for big things from him over the next couple of years,” Docherty said. “I look for him to become not much different than his brother for our team, being a good leader.”

Alex started his state final with a loss to the eventual third-place finisher Pontiac’s Alex Friedman. Alex won a major decision in the quarterfinals of the wrestlebacks. In the semifinal, he recorded another win. This time he beat Oak Park’s Mike Kozyra 14-11. He lost his fifth-place match to Mike Zelasco by technical fall.

“I couldn’t be prouder of Alex,” Docherty said. “He was our captain last year. He was a captain this year.”

Blake Stricklin was the last medalist for the Rams. He finished third in 2010.
