Carbondale routs Rams

MT. VERNON — MT. VERNON — Sean Bauman took just three minutes and two seconds to send a forceful reminder that his Carbondale Terriers are still the class of the South 7.

Bauman blistered a low shot across the Mt. Vernon goal and into the back of the net in the third minute — the first of five goals for Bauman — to open the scoring and the 9-1 rout of Mt. Vernon Township High School on Tuesday.

Carbondale dashed any Mt. Vernon upset hopes early and often.

Four minutes after Bauman’s first strike, Daniel Sherwood found the goal, and Bauman added two more goals before 20 minutes of play had elapsed to put the Rams in an early 4-0 hole.

“The longer you let them stay in the game, the more confidence they get,” Carbondale coach Mike Cannell said. “Getting early goals is extremely important.”

When Carbondale pulled Bauman from the game, Mt. Vernon actually started to dominate possession and created a series of scoring chances in the first half’s final 15 minutes.

“I think that our kids have been around long enough that they know Carbondale is where we want to be, and they’re the powerhouse,” Harrison said. “They came out thinking that they weren’t going to play with them, and then they got frustrated and started playing hard.”

The Rams went to work on the left side of the field with attacks and runs from left-footed sophomore pair Joel Duncan and Zach Swinnen.

First, a Matt Nichols cross found the chest of Duncan with a wide open goal, but the Carbondale defenders closed down the attack before Duncan could get off a shot.

Two minutes later, Swinnen had a look from the left side, but his shot was off-target.

Carbondale took advantage of the high Mt. Vernon defense and counterattacked in the 31st minute with a goal from Karl Borgsmiller to make the game 5-1.

“Our forwards Simon and Bauman were doing a good job of getting in behind, and we got good service from our midfielders to spring them,” Cannell said.

But after that goal, the Rams finally struck back. In the 32nd minute, Nichols again crossed to Duncan in the middle of the field, and Duncan unloaded with a low strike across the frame to find the back of the net.

“He’s going to be a good little player,” Harrison said. “I’m not sure how many of our varsity team could start for a Carbondale, but I would say Joel would be one of those kids.”

Duncan again broke free and scored an apparent goal two minutes later, but the goal was waved off on an offsides call. Another shot from Swinnen on an empty goal minutes later was blocked by the Carbondale defense.

“They were probably a bit unlucky to not get another goal or two and make it a game at halftime,” Cannell said. “I thought they outworked us and outplayed us at the end of the first half.”

The Terriers quickly righted the ship and regained momentum when, with Bauman back in the lineup, they scored two more goals in the fifth and sixth minutes of the game to make the score 7-1.

Goals from Jabari Simon and Sherwood resulted in the final margin.

“I would have loved to have thought we could’ve won that game,” Harrison said. “But, in the real world, I knew we couldn’t. I was just hoping we could be competitive.”
