Rams’ golfer announces college choice

MT. VERNON — Trevor Flota didn’t start playing golf until his freshman year of high school, but he’s excelled at the sport over the past few years.

That success has led to a collegiate opportunity, and he will continue his career at the University of Illinois Springfield.

“He goes from never playing as a freshman in high school (to signing) a letter of intent to attend a Division II school,” Mt. Vernon golf coach Quinn McClure said. “He’s a poster child for what hard work is.”

Flota teams up with one of his friends former Woodlawn and state finalist Nick Tannahill.

“I’ll be transitioning to a new town and a new school for the next four years so that should make it a little bit easier to just get by with everything because I know a few people up there,” Flota said.

Flota was a state finalist this season at the 2A level. He finished tied for 17th after a round of 78. He ended with a birdie, four bogeys and two double bogey over 18 holes.

“It was a great experience to go up there and just get the feel of a big tournament,” Flota said. “That was my goal, to go up there and do good.”

In addition to golf, Flota plays baseball and basketball for the Rams. He didn’t start playing golf until he was sidelined from baseball and basketball because of surgery. Flota has combined his natural talent for the sport with hard work.

“Every day in the summer I practiced,” Flota said. “If not once a day, twice a day I would practice for hours and hours a day. I just love playing golf. If I had free time I would either go out to the golf course and just chip and putt or just go play some holes.”

The University of Illinois Springfield competes in Division II athletics. McClure said the level of competition will increase for Flota.

“Where he’s been the one (player) here, he’s going to go to a team that’s all number ones in high school,” he said.
