Trio medal at state youth wrestling tournament

The Mt. Vernon Lions traveled to the Rockford Metro Centre with five wrestlers over the weekend to compete in the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation Novice/Senior State Tournament.

Three of those Lions returned to the King City with medals.

Tristan Penrod (177 pounds, Novice) went 5-1 and captured third place, defeating Dalton Kettering of Rock Island 8-6 in overtime in the third-place bout.

Trace Carello (108, Novice) was 4-2 in the tourney and won a seventh-place medal by downing Matt Kleinkopf of Oak Park 17-5 in the medal round.

Chase Vosburgh (108, Senior) brought home an eighth-place medal. He was defeated by Flynn Nagle of Palos Hills, 10-3 in the medal round.

Jacob Persman (95, Novice) and Alex Hopkins (101, Senior) also competed in the event but did not place.

The Lions finished 26th in the team standings out of 188 teams entered in the competition.

“We have had a state medalist in each of the last 7 seasons, but we have never had three medalists in the same season,” said co-coach Scott Tickner. “This was by far our best showing at state.

“The competition was fierce. These kids battled the best Illinois has to offer and three of them came home with medals. The represented their families, their team, and their community very well. We are extremely proud of all of them.

“With four of these athletes being seventh graders and one a sixth grader, they will have another shot at bringing home an IKWF state title next year.”

Teammates Gage Burroughs and Brandon Rutherford will compete this weekend in the IKWF Intermediate (ages 9 and 10) State Finals at Palmer Arena in Danville.
