WOODLAWN —
Sabrina Durham spent last season as an attacking presence for the Lady Cardinals volleyball team.
Her career will continue at Kaskaskia College after she recently committed to the school.
“I’m really excited for her. I think that she deserves it, she’s worked hard for it,” Woodlawn coach Sara Lamczyk said. “It’s just an exciting day for me to see one of my players go on. That’s kind of the goal of a high school coach is to have their players go on and play in college.”
Durham was the lone senior on a team with a young core of starting players this season.
“She was just a team leader,” Lamczyk said. “She’s been playing for me since she was a sophomore, starting varsity. That’s pretty big. She just did awesome for me this year. Anything I asked, she did it. She was one of the top contenders in kills and digs.
“She’s just a big part of our team.”
Durham was part of a Woodlawn squad that finished the season 19-9 overall and won the 1A regional title after upsetting Centralia’ Christ Our Rock in the championship. In the final, Durham finished with 10 kills and a pair of blocks.
“We had a really good team in my opinion,” Durham said. “There was a lot of younger girls, but they’re very good and I played with them in club ball and grade school so I’m used to them. I think we did really well during our season.”
The Lady Cardinals competed in the sectional semifinals and lost to St. Elmo 25-14, 25-13. The Eagles advanced all the way to the super-sectional before a loss to Valmeyer ended their season.
