CARBONDALE —
Mt. Vernon’s wrestling team tied for second at the South Seven meet Saturday.
Marion won the conference title with the Rams, Carbondale and Cahokia sharing second. Althoff finished third with Centralia in fourth. Mt. Vernon coach Sean Docherty said the dual match format helped his team.
“It’s kind of nice to see how you match up in certain situations,” Docherty said. “It helps for the seed meeting on Thursday night to decide who gets the No. 1 seed in each weight class for the regional.
“I think it really woke some of the kids up. I think they understand what they need to do in order to get to out of regional.”
Mt. Vernon had six wrestlers named all-conference. Quentin Favors (120 pounds), Chase Vosburgh (152), Alex Vosburgh (170), Tristan Penrod (195) and Justin Armstrong (285) all made the first team with Kalen Roberts (106) named to the second team.
In dual matches Mt. Vernon beat Althoff and Carbondale after dismantling Centralia on Friday night. The Rams lost to Cahokia and Marion. Josiah Fitzjerrells sealed the Rams’ 39-37 win against Carbondale with a pin in the final matchup.
Mt. Vernon lost 41-33 to Marion. With two matches left, Mt. Vernon needed a win and a pin from Fitzjerrells and Favors. Fitzjerrells lost his match 9-8, before Favors defeated his opponent.
Mt. Vernon travels back to Carbondale for the regional on Saturday.
“They’re ready for it,” Docherty said. “I could see it today. Even though they’re tired.
“You could tell they were ready to go. So I feel pretty good about our chances (in the regional).”
