SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Dozens of Illinois lawmakers are getting visits from union members upset about the state’s budget gridlock.
Members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees were scheduled to hold protests Monday at the offices of about 40 legislators. They’re angry that Illinois has gone without a state budget for two weeks.
Lawmakers return to the state Capitol on Tuesday to debate the budget again.
Without a budget, checks could be delayed for state employees and local groups that provide services on behalf of the state. Even if a budget is approved, jobs and spending could be slashed to help close a record-breaking deficit.
AFSCME says its rallies include child-protection workers, people who provide care to the elderly and disabled, university employees, prison guards and more.
