Township road commissioner sentenced in fraud case

BENTON (AP) — A southern Illinois road commissioner has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for misusing his position to get federal surplus property he illegally kept to himself or supplied to family and friends.

A federal judge in Benton also sentenced 71-year-old June Bailey of Cisne to three years of probation and fined Bailey $10,000 on Thursday. The road commissioner for Wayne County’s Berry Township pleaded guilty to mail fraud.

Federal officials say between May 2007 and last October, Bailey allegedly bought surplus government equipment including construction equipment, trucks and 16 FEMA campers.

Such property is supposed to go to government agencies or nonprofit organizations for their own use. But the indictment alleged Bailey used the equipment on his farm or in his excavation business and sold trailers to family and friends.
