SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Illinois wild turkey hunters harvested 1,330 birds during the 2012 season, a slight increase over the previous year.
The Department of Natural Resources announced Tuesday interest in fall turkey hunting is particularly strong with archery hunters who are able to harvest a wild turkey while deer hunting.
The number of wild turkeys harvested during the fall archery harvest increased about 8.4 percent over 2011. The fall firearm harvest fell about 6.7 percent.
Overall, the harvest increased about 1 percent over 2011.
The archery wild turkey season ran from Oct. 1 to Jan. 20 in 96 counties. The firearm season was Oct. 20 to 28 in 51 counties.
The firearm harvest was greatest in Jo Daviess County. Fulton County had the top archery harvest.
