BENTON (AP) — A southern Illinois man has been ordered to stand trial on an involuntary manslaughter charge related to the death of a fellow tavern patron.
The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan (http://bit.ly/11R1xLG) reports that 45-year-old Michael Romani pleaded not guilty after his preliminary hearing in Franklin County Circuit Court.
Romani is accused of causing the Dec. 27 death of 56-year-old John Franklin of Sesser by striking him at The Bank Lounge of Sesser, causing the victim to fall to the floor.
An investigator testified witnesses reported that Romani and another man were arguing when Franklin began speaking to Romani in an insulting, provoking manner. Witnesses contradicted whether Romani or Franklin threw the first punch.
Romani also is charged with aggravated battery.
