WHEATON (AP) — A northern Illinois man who crashed his car while driving drunk at 142 mph will not be going to jail.
A judge sentenced Dean Suominen to court supervision and community service for the January 2012 crash in the Chicago suburb of Naperville.
The 37-year-old from Shorewood avoided a possible jail term by pleading guilty to drunken driving and reckless driving.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports (http://bit.ly/Y0b52z ) that Suominen lost control of his car and struck a curb, sending the vehicle into the air and crashing into the post of a billboard.
Authorities say the car was in pieces, but the man had only minor injuries.
Prosecutor Michael DiSanto says Suominen's blood-alcohol content was twice the legal limit for driving.
According to the car's data recorder, the man was driving 142 mph.
