Experiencing the old days in a classroom

Retired teacher Sharon Nichols once again stood before a class on Thursday at the one-room schoolhouse at the Jefferson County Historical Village, as part of the “A Day in the Life of a Prairie Child” program. Nichols held the attention of all in her class as she read a story from the McGuffey Reader and led them through not just the entertainment of hearing a story, but the moral lessons contained in the text as well. The full-day program included a spelling bee, ciphering, school yard games and lessons on chores a child would have performed in the 1800s.
