Church hosts Christmas Day dinner

MT. VERNON — — Residents of Rose Lane Apartments enjoyed a hot meal and fellowship thanks to the service of volunteers from Meadowbrook Christian Church on Christmas Day.

The church has been providing a free hot meal to residents for about 15 years, said pastor Mike Sheets. He said this year, he believed the volunteers served a record number of residents, with a total of about 100, including more than 50 delivered meals.

Sheets said Meadowbrook Christian Church participated in a city-wide Christmas dinner years ago, and when that stopped, the church just kept providing a meal for its zone, Rose Lane.

“Most people at Rose Lane are by themselves, so this gives them a place to sit and talk,” he said. “When we found out there were people who couldn’t get here, we volunteered to do mobile meals. It’s a good meal and someplace to go on Christmas.”

Residents were treated to ham, potatoes, green beans, slaw, homemade desserts and more, said church member Larry Wood.

“This is the biggest crowd we’ve had,” he said. “We always try to figure for 100. We usually have about 30.”

A Rose Lane resident, Clariece Thrailkill, said she thought the event was very nice.

Mona Pretz, another resident, came to the activity center to take part in the meal with her neighbor Dorothy Ratajczyk.

“It is wonderful,” she said. “Any day I don’t have to cook is wonderful.”

Ratajczyk said Rose Lane held senior dinners at the activity center in the past, and she enjoyed attending those as well.

“I love coming down here to eat,” she said. “It was really good today.”

Sheets said in the decade and a half Meadowbrook parishoners have been volunteering part of their Christmas Day to come down to Rose Lane, the residents have been appreciative.

“They really like it,” he said. “This year, we had a ton more people come in. For some reason it jumped, and I think this is the biggest year we’ve ever had.”
