Honoring our veterans

Residents throughout the community chose to honor veterans with a parade and memorial services. In Waltonville, one of the biggest Veterans Day Parades in recent history wound through the crowd-lined streets of the village, culminating in a ceremony at the Waltonville High School honoring veterans. At the Times Square Mall in Mt. Vernon, VFW Post 9233 held its 18th Annual “Buddy Poppy” Salute to all U.S. War Veterans. Gold Star Mother Cheryl Hunsell kissed roses and placed them on the “Flanders Field” and a ringing of the bells to commemorate the Armistice signing on Nov. 11, 1918, at 11 a.m. was conducted. In Woodlawn, residents gathered around the Woodlawn Veterans Memorial where they had a moment of silence for veterans and soldiers currently serving. Col. R.D. White spoke of the importance of supporting troops during the upcoming holidays and praised the fundraising activities of the Jefferson County Operation Iraqi Freedom Committee.

Ina resident wins Spotlight Literacy Award

Anne Craig, director of the Illinois State Library and Dennis DeRosset, executive director of the Illinois Press Association presented an award to Yaro Hospodarsky of Ina for his work as volunteer with the Adult Literacy Program at Rend Lake College. Hospodarsky was one of 20 winners throughout the state of Illinois who were recognized for their work in the 2012 Spotlight Literacy Awards.
